DEFINITION |
|
In 1997 ENDESA, the regional government of Galicia, and the trade-union organizations signed the Economic and Industrial development plan for As Pontes.
The plan was conceived to support the creation of new companies, the industrial diversification of the area and the creation of alternative employment after the closing of the lignite mine which supplied the ENDESA energy and mine complex.

MAIN OBJETIVE |
|
- To support investment incentives and the creation of employment.
- To attract new external investment projects.
- To create and maintain an atmosphere of support for the incentives and projects (from the regional government of Galicia, from central administration institutions, local and central federations of trade unions).
- To improve the infrastructure and connections of roads.
- To improve social, cultural and entrepreneurial infrastructures.
- To encourage local initiatives.
- To train the work force.
- To take environmental issues into consideration.

INSTRUMENTS |
|
The Plan includes 5 economic diversification tools:
- Improvement of the road infrastructures that connect As Pontes with the ports of Ferrol and A Coruña, the plateau, the cantabric cornice and the atlantic axis Ferrol-Lisboa.
- Creation of new industrial ground in the As Pontes district.
- Lost fund subventions gifted by ENDESA, to complete the state funds designated for inversion projects based in the zone
- Creation of the “Oficina de Promoción y Desarrollo Económico (OPYDE)”: An advice office for investment projects that generate employment included in the Plan
- Training.

GOALS |
|
The most important achievements of the Plan (1997-2007) are:
- 1.276 new employments, 576 more than the initial objective.
- 20 hectares of newly constructed industrial ground, executing 14,4 new hectares.
- 50 new companies thanks to the support of the plan, thus making diversification of the region’s economic structure a reality.
- Generation of 244,8 million euros of investment.
